Million Dot Pictures
What is a million dot picture? That is a very good question. I
have used the formula that Clifford Pickover present in his book
"Computers and the Imagination", with several slight modifications.
He has called them "artistic chaotic patterns..representing
mathematical objects called attractors". This means that when you
change the numbers in the formulas, or change the formulas you will
generate a very much different picture.
Back to the first question, what is a million dot picture? I am
not sure. Some of them look like two dimensional scarfs flowing in an
etherial four dimensional space, some of them look like faces appearing
in the mist, and some of them are just random dots that look like dots.
But they all appear slowly on the screen, being generated in a random
pattern, depending on the initial parameters. Many of them are quite
attractive nevertheless.
The program is quite easy to use, and will work in all resolution
including the TT resolution, except for low resolution. Click on the
program, and after the title screen, you will have a choice for which
formula to use. Select any of the four and then a screen will appear
as to the preference of your values for alpha and beta. Use any
number, integer, decimal, negative, and dots will start appearing on
the screen. To pause, press the "P" key. To restart the generation,
press any other key. To stop, press any key.
The program is quite sensitive to the values of alpha and beta.
Some values cause lovely pictures to appear, some cause jut random dots
to appear. I will not give any of my favorite values, but allow you to
explore this chaotic world yourself.
If anybody would like a version of this program that will print
out the pictures, just give me a yell. The source code, in Modula-2,
can be purchased for $5.
This is the third in a series of graphical-mathematical programs
for the ST-TT series of computers. Collect the whole set.
